This July 13th through the 15th, Compass Project will present its eighth Annual Boat Building Festival at
Back Cove Park on Preble Street Extension (accross from Hannaford). Compass Project is a Portland-based
youth development organization that engages at-risk youth through experiential boat building programs.
These hands-on programs help youth find new directions for the future by combining life-skills,
academic challenges and job-skills training
During the Festival, 12-15 teams of amateurs will work side by side building their own 12-foot rowing
skiffs. The finished boats will be launched from East End Beach on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
Watch as the boats come together in stages. Glimpse a rare oar-making demonstration. And be sure to
join in some fun activities for the kids. You can enjoy live music near the water - even become
part of the Duck Boat parade to East End Beach on Sunday afternoon.
The Row-Down! Kids won't want to miss the first-ever mascot row-down, a competition that
will pit the Portland Seadogs' Slugger against the Maine Red Claws' Crusher. Who will emerge victorious?
Find out Saturday at 4:00 pm.
